Big Picture Learning
Zoe Barnum High School is a Big Picture Learning Campus.
Zoe Barnum High School is a Big Picture Learning campus within Eureka City Schools, meaning students engage in a personalized, hands-on education model that connects classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through Learning Through Interests (LTIs), internships, and close advisory relationships, students explore their passions, develop essential skills, and prepare for life beyond graduation in a way that is tailored to their individual goals.
About Big Picture Learning:
Big Picture Learning (BPL) is a national (and international) educational movement founded in 1995 that reimagines traditional schooling by placing students at the center of their own learning. The BPL model is grounded in the belief that education should be personalized, real-world connected, and driven by each student’s interests and goals.
In a Big Picture Learning school, students work closely with an advisor and a small advisory group, design individualized learning plans, and spend significant time outside the classroom in Learning Through Interests (LTIs) — internships or mentorships in the community aligned with their passions.
The movement emphasizes:
-
Real-world learning through internships and projects,
-
Personalized education that reflects each student’s strengths, challenges, and interests,
-
Strong relationships between students, advisors, families, and mentors,
-
Authentic assessment through exhibitions and portfolios rather than traditional tests.
Today, Big Picture Learning supports hundreds of schools across the U.S. and around the world, partnering with districts like Eureka City City Schools and to transform education so every student is known, inspired, and prepared for life beyond school.
